Microchips Designed in Latvia: From Simulation to Real Devices

On 5 March, during the Icebreakers’26 festival at the University of Latvia (Latvijas Universitāte), the Latvian Chip Competence Centre introduced students, doctoral researchers and scientists to microchip and integrated circuit innovations developed in Latvia. The session was organised in collaboration with the University of Latvia’s Innovation and Acceleration Centre.

The event showcased technologies created through collaboration between research institutions and industry, highlighting several application areas:

  • specialised microchips for sensor systems
  • energy-efficient wireless communication technologies
  • precision time-synchronisation and data-processing components

Participants also explored functional prototypes and electronic devices, including data loggers and wireless sensors, illustrating how these microchips operate in real industrial and research environments.

The presentation also provided an overview of the full microchip development cycle — from architecture design and simulation to prototyping and validation in operational systems.

Encouraging students and young researchers to engage with microelectronics is an important step towards strengthening Latvia’s role within the European semiconductor ecosystem.
